What causes cradle cap?
Cradle cap is the result of overactive glands in your baby’s scalp – they secrete too much oily dischage, which accumulates into patchy areas and then flake off once it’s dried.
“It’s caused by hormones that are passed from mother to baby during childbirth,” says Dr. John Meyers, a pediatrician in San Francisco. “Once the hormones level out, your baby’s cradle cap will disappear.”
According to the Mayo Clinic, the best way to remove the scales is to massage mild olive oil into your baby’s scalp twice a week. Leave it in for 10-15 minutes, softly comb out the flakes, and then wash your baby’s hair with baby shampoo.
In addition, leave the baby shampoo on your baby’s head for 15-20 minutes, or as long as your little one can stand it. Once it’s rinsed out, massage the scalp with a soft toothbrush. Remember, cradle cap will eventually clear up on it’s own. If the condition persists or gets worse, consult your pediatrictian – she may prescribe a special medicated shampoo.
