The Joppa Flats Education Center of Mass Audubon and Plum Island Kayak are sponsoring a ”Seal Paddle” kayaking trip for adults on Monday, October 20th, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The mouth of the Merrimack River is a reliable place to see harbor seals during the spring and fall. These beautiful animals can often be seen feeding in the river or basking on the rocks along the north bank of the river.
Kayaks for the “Seal Paddle” will be launched at the Newburyport waterfront. The group will paddle across the Merrimack RIver to the Salisbury side, and then drift and paddle to Badger’s Rocks near the mouth of the river.
En route, the kayakers will explore the mudflats and tidal creeks, looking for shorebirds and egrets. At Badger’s Rocks, the group will stop to study the seals. After a rest stop at Salisbury Beach State Reservation, the incoming tide will be used to help everyone paddle back to the waterfront.
You will have four hours of paddling time with a 30-minute break. Kayaking Experience Not Required
Instruction in kayaking techniques and safety procedures will be provided. No experience is required; however, some degree of physical stamina is required to paddle your kayak.
Cost
$55 for Mass Audubon members; $65 for nonmembers. Registration is required. The fee covers a single kayak rental. Take $10 off per person for double kayak rental and $20 per person for tag alongs.
