Man on disability jumps in to rescue boogie boarder off Gulfport
GULFPORT — Ron Carroll started waving for help Saturday afternoon when he realized he had drifted too far from shore and was unable to swim through the current to get back.
Unfortunately for Carroll, his friends and family misinterpreted his gestures.
"They thought I was just waving because I was proud about how far out I was," Carroll, 37, of Rogersville, Ala., said Sunday. "They didn't realize I was waving for help."
Wayne Thompson did understand.
Thompson, 58, lives on a boat docked near the Gulfport Casino Ballroom. When he saw Carroll drift by on a boogie board Saturday afternoon, struggling to keep his head above water, he acted.
"It's hard for me just to go swimming," said Thompson, who lives on disability payments and said he has several ailments, including bad knees. "But if I see someone drowning next to my boat, I'm going to jump in and try to save him."
Thompson wrapped a small flotation device around Carroll and dragged him to shore.
Carroll, a father of five who owns a landscaping company, said he passed out shortly after Thompson reached him.
"I was done. I was definitely a goner," Carroll said.
Carroll's mother, Rebecca Jernigan, 60, of Tampa, said she plans on doing something nice for Thompson, but hasn't figured out exactly what yet.
Thompson already got a bit of a reward Saturday night from a few of his fellow patrons at the Neptune Grill in Gulfport.
Thompson headed over to the nearby bar shortly after he pulled Carroll to shore, and regaled people there with his rescue story. They bought him several rounds.
"He had them stacked up," said Angie Anderson, Neptune's bartender. "He had like four or five of them in a row before I left."

Boogie Boarding
If you are looking for a fun new experience that will really help you enjoy your next vacation you may want to think about checking out how to start boogieboarding. Somewhat of a mix between surfing and skiing, boogieboarding is the latest water sport craze and for good reason, because when you are out on the ocean on a board you will quickly find yourself having so much fun that you will not want to even think about heading into shore.
Many people get confused between what the difference is between boogieboarding and surfing, and rightly so as they both take place on the water and from the shore look very similar. However, the easiest way to describe the difference is to explain that boogie boarding is much more like body surfing and is a great deal more hands on given the fact that when you are boarding you have a much smaller board to rest on which means that it is a high contact sport. Mondrian's Boogie Woogie is the last painting that contemporary, abstract artist Mondrian produced. From his earlier works, where he focused on large rectangular planes divided abstract lines he now produced a kind of zoomed out style, with smaller, more frequent rectangles, again using his typical "Golden Rectangle" proportions. The phrase Broadway Boogie Woogie refers to his desire to make this painting a kind of city overhead depiction, with small rectangles to indicate key areas of excitement and entertainment. Piet Mondrian (born March 7, 1872) was a Dutch painter who played a pioneering role in bringing art forms, such as 'Neo-Plasticism' and 'Cubism,' into limelight. His experimentation with geometric figures and 'Abstract' drawing has always made his paintings extraordinary and ingenious in style. "Broadway Boogie Woogie," painted in 1943, is one such Piet's work endorsing his mastery. It is this thrill alone that gets plenty of water sports enthusiasts addicted to the idea of hitting the waves as much as possible.
The first thing that you will notice when you look at a boogieboard is the fact that it is tiny next to a surf board as there is only room for just about the midsection of your body with a tiny bit of overspill. Usually they are made out of wood or fiberglass since both of these materials are very porous and float well in the water which is very important when it comes to boogieboarding effectively. If you are on holiday you will not have to worry about these details as much since you can easily rent a boogieboard from any of the water sports shops instead of purchasing one.
