Local 9/11 memorial planned

BENNINGTON -- Both planning and fund-raising efforts are under way for the installation of a piece of steel beam from the World Trade Center in Memorial Fountain Park on Sept. 11 to mark the 10th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks.

The steel, which was obtained by Rich Ryder of Pownal from a friend who had done excavation work at the World Trade Center site, will be set into a block of Danby marble and will share the park with a memorial bench to the people who died in the attack and with the elaborate Victorian-era fountain that was restored by the Bennington Rotary Club and presented to the town last May.

Memorial Fountain Park is located on South Street, between the court house and the old stone blacksmith's shop that now houses the Better Bennington Corporation. Along with Ryder, the effort to install the steel memorial and arrange for the dedication ceremony has been headed by Jerry Albert and some of the others who also oversaw the volunteer effort to restore the old fountain.

The plans call for the dedication of the memorial at 8:30 a.m. on the morning of Sept. 11, the timing intended to coincide with the moment at 8:46 a.m. that the first plane hit the North Tower. There will be a presentation of colors by the VFW Post 1332 Ladies Auxiliary and members of American Legion Post 13; a Pledge of Allegiance; the National Anthem sung by Carly Rogers; an Invocation by the Rev. Mary Lee-Clark; and a moment of silence.

There also will be a ringing of the ship's bell from the World War II aircraft carrier, the USS Bennington; the dedication of the memorial; a laying of wreaths by various fraternal and service organizations; music by the Mount Anthony Union High School band and by bagpiper Merrick Hard; and a keynote speech by Bennington attorney Donald Goodrich, whose son, Peter, was on one of the highjacked planes crashed in New York.

Although the steel itself was donated by Ryder's friend, the late Bill Harris, the costs of the 5,400-pound block of marble, the sandblasting and transportation of it, a sidewalk leading to it and other landscaping is expected to cost a bit over $5,900, slightly more than $2,000 of which already has been raised. Contributions of $500 each already have been received from the Stark Hose Company, the Elks, the VFW and Mutual Aid.
