Moorhead soccer venue set for action

MOORHEAD – Hundreds of youth soccer players will converge at the Moorhead Soccer Complex for the start of the Tri-City Scheels and Adidas soccer tournament today.

The tournament will host 160 teams. The south Moorhead venue will host 40 different teams from the U15-U19 divisions. The Pepsi Soccer Complex in Fargo will also host tournament games.

The tournament kicks off today at 1 p.m. and will continue play until Sunday.

The complex is in its second year of operation. President of the Moorhead Youth Soccer Club Noel Nyborg said the fields give area soccer players a quality facility to learn the game.

“It’s a complete step up from what they had at the old Moorview Fields,” Nyborg said.

Before the complex opened up, members of the Moorhead Youth Soccer Club played games at the Pepsi Soccer Complex and the fields at Minnesota State Community and Technical College.

The field has the capacity to support 10 full-sized soccer fields, but will only utilize five for the tournament. The City of Moorhead maintains the fields and Miracle Field sits at the south end of the complex.

Complete concessions and restroom facilities are offered during operating hours. The concession building also has heat, air conditioning, internet access and televisions available.

Teams entered in the tournament come from Fargo-Moorhead, the Twin Cities, Manitoba and South Dakota. A team from Thunder Bay, Ont., will even make the journey to compete.

Tournament director Randy Jewett said the complex was the obvious choice as a secondary venue for the tournament. He also said the complex gives Moorhead players a great place to play the game.

“I think it’s a big step for Moorhead. I think it provides a home, a place to play with proper concession stands and proper restroom facilities,” Jewett said. “It brings more excitement to the community.
