One that didn't get away: Pair catch huge halibut

HOMER, Alaska — We are fishing buddies. We are very competitive as a part of our fishing and love to “trash talk” each other, so much so that we have a “stinky fish” award that we pass back and forth following most of our outings.

This time, however, was different. We were going fishing together on a charter out of Homer, Alaska.

On May 28, we got everything set for our Monday outing on Bob’s Charter Service. We headed out at 6:15 a.m. to catch breakfast and arrive in plenty of time. Bob’s was open early and we stopped before going to the boat.

I had a good feeling about today’s outing, but then I always am sure we are going to limit out or get the big one and announced to Rick, “We are getting some derby tickets.”

Rick’s response was, “No, don’t bother.”

“We’re getting them! I’ll buy for both of us,” I replied. “We’ve been very lucky lately and today we are going to get a ‘shooter.’”

I get very much teasing about my fishing optimism and today was no different. The Homer Halibut derby goes May-September and tickets are $10 for a ticket per person per day.

Who knows, we might get lucky? We might catch a tagged fish…who knows? The surest way to catch a prize fish is to not buy a ticket and I would not want to let that happen. Let’s go fishing!

We had six adults on the charter to fish for halibut in the morning and salmon in the afternoon. Rick and I, Dan, Cookie, Carolyn and Cathy were ready to fish.

Our captain, Trenton, and deckhand, Joe, put us on course for the big day.

We caught some halibut in the morning. Cookie got one about 60 pounds and Dan got one slightly smaller. These were both very nice fish!

Rick and I each caught about a 15-20 pound fish and the other two girls each got smaller ones.

Everyone caught a fish and we had two nice ones in the cooler. Of course we wanted more; fishermen and fisherwomen are never totally satisfied!

Noon came and went, we ate our lunch and moved to trolling for salmon. Trenton had announced that we would troll for salmon from 1 to 4 p.m. and then head back.

It had been pretty windy and rough all day. There were 4-6 foot waves and the wind made it pleasant but a bit on the cool side. The rough water and slow bite made the time pass a bit on the slow side; we were wearing down.

Joe got a small rockfish about 3 p.m. or so. Shortly after, I noticed action on one of the poles and Joe saw it, too. He took the pole from the rod holder, turned and handed the pole to me. I felt some resistance, gave a jerk and started reeling.
