Going for the online lessons

In 2011, almost four decades after Pink Floyd , it’s not so much a case of "we don't need no education" as "we don't need so much education".

That’s because there’s so much of it online, wherever you search. Millions of answers to one simple question a teacher might have – like how to explain the volume of three-dimensional shapes.

And it’s the same for companies: a wealth of material out there to help train your staff – but often not quite the right, simple service.

The problem is this: all too often education online is not quality controlled, not structured and nowhere near as efficient to find as typing a phrase into search would suggest. It’s a kind of exponential inefficiency.

Put a staff development or education term into Google – say, PAYE coding, or Chemistry lesson plan Key Stage 3 - and you will get an unstructured flow of material back (in that case, 133,000 results) much of it unsuitable. Even if you find something you like, you’ll need to go back to the jeopardy of a raw search each new time - just to find the next source.

Which is why good quality benchmarking in training content is more important than ever - and why a site such as our own just-launched Schoolsworld can be useful. (There are others, of course, but not that many.)

We’ve licensed the content from the government’s Teachers TV channel (which our group Ten Alps actually produced for them) 3500 topic-specific and high-end educational and training videos, and brought them into an even more focused online place where what you look for is what you learn about. 

Online video, properly targeted, is an incredibly effective tool: time-efficient, information-efficient. 

The original site was aimed just at those working in UK schools – teachers, classroom assistants, governors – because that’s who the Department for Education needed to reach.

Our plan is to now take it much further – including to corporates. To UK pupils and parents, we can offer a doorway into benchmarked video content. To overseas teachers and students, we can not only offer a one-stop-shop, but also start to build a cloud of best-practice from around the world. And for companies we can go further than that – into safety, accounting, HR – any issue in the workplace. We can also bring in subject specific products – like a Newton science education channel, or our Children’s Traffic Club road safety materials.
