City pool to open Saturday
“It is certainly a lot of relief to finally be able to open,” Neal said.
The pool was scheduled to open Memorial day, but the pumps failed and it has taken nearly 3 1/2 weeks for the pumps to be ordered, arrive, installed and a water test completed.
Now things seem to be on schedule.
“Now we just need the weather to cooperate,” Neal said.
Neal said the new pumps will help the pool in a number of ways.
“The water will be a little cleaner,” he said. “With the old pumps there was a lot of guesswork as to how much chlorine and chemicals to put into the water. These new pumps are all digital and that guesswork has been eliminated. It should also help cut down on some of the cost of chlorine.”
Since the pool will only be open for 51 of its originally scheduled 77 days this summer, Neal said anyone who has bought a pool pass will be reimbursed for a portion of the pass. He said the total cost of the pass will be pro-rated. Pool passes will still be on sale at reduced prices. Basically, the price is about two-thirds of what they would have been. For an exact cost, call the Park and Rec Department at 364-5175.
Neal said the pool would not be charging the additional 50 cent non-resident fee this year. Everyone will be able to swim for the same price whether they are city residents or not.
Neal has yet to determine the impact of the lost revenue.
“I haven’t figured out the exact cost, but I do know we hadn’t ordered the full summer’s worth of chemicals,” he said. “We ordered about one-third of it. We have only had two or three lifeguards doing various jobs, instead of having seven or eight working each day so we are hoping for the loss in revenue to about be a wash with the savings from not being open.”
Neal said the next items that need replaced are the surge tanks. He estimates that will cost $50,000 to $55,000.
“This pool has a lot of needs, but until the people of this town tell me to shut it down and build a brand new one for probably someplace around $2.5 million, we will keep trying to keep this one operating,” he said.
