York YMCA receives $27500 from Wal-Mart
William Wertz, Walmart Director of Community and Media Relations - East, stressed the company’s commitment to children this summer: “This program is so important to children, families and communities facing tough times. Walmart is stepping up and making a difference with this grant, which will help organizations like the Y expand programs that give kids in York access to healthy meals and learning opportunities while school is out.” • The $7,500 Engagement Grant funds the new YMCA Feed and Seed Program, targeting youth between the ages of 11 and 17. This program provides a daily free hot lunch, produce and herbs harvested from the Feed and Seed Youth Garden, and daily educational opportunities provided in partnership with Penn State Urban 4H, York County Library System and WellSpan Health. “The Y is committed to helping members of the York community have healthy lifestyles. Thanks to the generosity of funders and partnerships with key York organizations, we are moving forward with a fresh food movement that not only educates youth and families on the importance of good nutrition, but provides opportunities for individuals to receive nutritious meals, fresh produce and the means to implement gardens in an urban setting,” said Cori Strathmeyer, Wellness Director of the York Branch. “In partnering with the York City School District, the Eastern Y, in conjunction with Camp Spirit, will be providing both nutritious lunches and education on how a garden is tilled, planted, fertilized and harvested for over 150 youth this summer. We service children from all socio-economic strata, some of whom have never seen a ‘real garden’ before. Our camp is located on 16 acres, with wildlife, beautiful trees and open meadows. Having children who have no access to wide open spaces be able to run, play, swim and learn is a blessing. Without the Walmart grant, we would not be able to bring such diversity to the lives of so many York County children,” said Linda Gorter, Executive Director of the Eastern Branch.York County Parks - News

York County, SC | Rock Hill parks cleanup continues days after ...
Repair crews are making progress to reopen the city of Rock Hill's parks and recreational facilities after last's week storms.
John Taylor, operations supervisor for the city's Parks, Recreation and Tourism department, said that after Wednesday's storms the main focus was restoring power to the approximately 2,000 customers who had lost it.
"Our first priority was to help and assist utilities to get the power back on for people," he said.
Since then, most of the parks have reopened, and officials are still assessing damage costs.
"There is still some debris, but nothing major," Taylor said.
Several parks, including Cherry Park, Riverwalk and River Park/Waterford Trail, are still closed because of tree damage.
"It's not so much what's on the ground, it's what's hanging in the trees that's dangerous," Taylor said. "We don't want a tragic event to occur at all."
A limb longer than 2 or 3 inches is a danger, said Jesse Holliman, with the city's grounds and fields maintenance.
Holliman said he hasn't seen damage like this since he's been with the city.
"It's been awhile since we've closed this long," he said.
A tree fell through one of the Cherry Park softball field fences. The city has brought in two extra crews to help with work.
About 30 lights were damaged. Those lights are now angled away from the fields.
Taylor said Cherry Park should reopen by Wednesday, but that is subject to change.
Northside Greenway, TechPark Greenway and Riverwalk are closed until further notice. Friedheim Park is closed, parts of Fewell Park are closed and the outdoor spaces of Northside Recreation Center and Oakwood Acres are also closed.
At River Park, Taylor said it "looks like a bomb went off" because of all the tree limbs. The main road inside the park has been cleared.
"The crews are working very hard to clean up," Taylor said. "They do a terrific job, and they want to make sure they're doing it efficiently as well as safely."
A few picnic areas at Cherry Park were damaged, but other than that, Taylor said the city was fortunate.
"We were blessed not to have any major building damage," he said.
Other cities across York County reported mixed outcomes from the storm.
Greg Holmes, recreation director for the city of Clover, said the Clover Community Center didn't have power until Friday afternoon.
Clover Community Park was closed for about a day while crews removed downed trees from the walking trail, Holmes said.
