U.S. births decline for 3rd year straight
U.S. births apparently have declined for a third consecutive year, probably because of the weak economy.
Births hit an all-time high of more than 4.3 million in 2007, but fell 3 percent to slightly more than 4 million births last year, according to preliminary figures released Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Kissinger to donate papers to Yale
Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, who helped steer Vietnam War policy, will donate his collection of some 1 million documents and objects covering his life as a diplomat, teacher and private citizen to Yale University.
Yale President Richard Levin said Wednesday the collection will enhance Yale's archives of 20th century American leaders.
Adviser sentenced in Haiti smuggling
A man who acted as an adviser to a group of U.S. missionaries charged with taking children out of Haiti after an earthquake last year is going to federal prison after being convicted of smuggling immigrants into the United States through unguarded back roads in Vermont.
Jorge Torres, 33, was sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Burlington to three years and one month in prison on charges that dated to 2002.
Carrier returns from bin Laden burial
The U.S. Navy aircraft carrier from which the body of Osama bin Laden was buried at sea has returned to its home port in San Diego Bay.
USS Carl Vinson docked Wednesday at Naval Base Coronado.
The Carl Vinson was in the North Arabian Sea last month when it received a Navy SEAL team carrying the body of the mastermind of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
Iran launches 2nd satellite into orbit
Iran's state TV said the country has launched a satellite into Earth orbit, a feat that is likely to raise concerns among those who fear Iran's nuclear development program.
The locally produced satellite, called Rasid, was launched successfully by a Safir missile on Wednesday. It is designed to produce high resolution maps.
Iran launched its first satellite in 2009.
Dozens killed in Sudan clashes
A U.N. humanitarian report and aid workers caught in the crossfire reported on Wednesday an increase in violence in a new front near the already tense internal border between north and south Sudan, with dozens of people reported killed in attacks.
