New Preston's Revival

Quaint shopping districts are not uncommon in Litchfield County, as independent boutiques and shops in historic country settings are a defining characteristic of Connecticut’s Northwest Corner. However, there is something about this particular corner of Washington that gives the creators of the newly-launched newprestonct.com (its Webmaster is Peter Stiglin, co-owner of Pergola Home & Garden) the license to make such a declaration. It’s not that nowhere else but New Preston offers an eclectic mix of storefronts, places featuring antiques, women’s fashions, kitchen goods and more, all of it anchored by eateries that offer the best in natural and delicious cuisine. But it’s true that nowhere else but New Preston is home to such establishments lining a thoroughfare that leads to the gorgeous Lake Waramaug, all while being perched near an incredible waterfall on the East Aspetuck River. The dreadful winter that broke snowfall records and cleanup budgets all over the state was particularly detrimental to the village’s businesses, as snow dunes were piled so high that some storefronts were entirely concealed behind a wall of white. Compounding the problem, in January the state Department of Transportation began construction on a new retaining wall along the village’s Route 45 corridor, a project that didn’t finish until Memorial Day and had a sizable chunk of through- traffic rerouted. To merchants’ great relief, the stretch of road is now open, and the welcome warmth of spring naturally moved those economically obfuscating winter obstacles into the river. It was tough for a while, though, to stay solvent through snowdrifts, and poorly-marked detours proved tricky. So now it’s time for the shops to bounce back in a cooperative effort unlike any ever seen in New Preston. The first step is the village’s Web site, a place for people to visit and learn about the local economy, the history, the neighbors and the geography. There are black-and-white pictures on the site from decades past—it’s amazing to see how intact the area has remained—and links to the more than a dozen businesses that dot the landscape.
