how to airbrush Rat Fink with a vector mask
I think you're making things WAY too complicated for yourself. What do you need a mask for anyway? Make a pounce pattern and mop in the main color areas, then freehand the black outline to bring it all together, freehanding the hair along the way. If you want to add some depth, shade/highlight your base colors with some one-shot wet-on-wet, let it dry, then outline. You use a quill/lettering brush and fill in the areas with the colors of say the skin, the shorts, the teeth, and solid "larger areas". You dont have to be precise because the outline (the black) will cover the edges. Then, when background colors are dry you outline with a small quill or outliner brush. You will need a small brush anyway to do the hairs. Better get to practicing! Trust me, once you figure this out you'll be way ahead of where you'd been if you went the computer route. And i have a computer, and I cut masks. When i do cartoons i do it the same way. The pic below is crappy but you can get the idea.
