Kill Screen: World of Warcraft and the End of E3
Illustrations by Sarah Jacoby
The last computer game that caught my attention was Might and Magic , which I played for a few years, often with my sons. When they were young, I'd save a winning battle-- usually legions of dragons against a castle-- then set each boy up for the final fight. As they got older, they asked me for tactical advice. Years later, I ran into serious difficulties with Heroes of Might and Magic III and would have to ask my sons for help. The cycle of videogaming turns: the son becomes the father to the man.
Then we all discovered World of Warcraft . We set up two accounts, one for the family and one for me. I began with a paladin named Thorken, and pretty much loved the game from my first venture into Elwynn Forest.
Because I wandered the digital world, my leveling was woefully slow. And I came to understand that WoW was more than a mere game; it was a metaphor for the player's personality.
My wife created an Elf hunter. In life she is a chef and likes to knit; in WoW she devoted a lot of time to cooking and sewing. She has always owned dogs, and took great delight in preparing snacks to feed her in-game pet.
My older son is quite frugal and diligent, and rarely changes clothes more than once a week. He has no real hobby. In WoW , he quested consistently and never bought gear, but wore what he picked up. He ignored fishing and cooking.
The younger boy, however, is ever-enthusiastic for something new. He is group-oriented, loves clubs and sports, and enjoys being both provocative and silly. His style of play was to start a new character every three weeks, run him quickly up to level 30, get bored, and start another new character. He joined in-game groups and messaged insults until the leader threw him out. He had more actual fun than anyone in the family-- exactly as in real life.
This pattern continued among their friends. A kid known to steal Magic: The Gathering cards from someone's bedroom was the same WoW player who'd ninja the best gear right out from under you. The boy who excelled in geometry never got lost in a dungeon. The tomboy girl was the toughest warrior.
In life, I'm a collector of found objects: rocks and feathers and animal bones from the woods. One day my sons saw me at the WoW bank, arranging my belongings of rocks and feathers, all gray items, utterly useless in the game. The boys became overjoyed, in the way that teenagers can when realizing that their father really is a moron. Knowledge of my in-game collection of stupid items quickly spread throughout the high school. As a joke, their buddies began sending me rocks and feathers through the in-game mail service.

They have another app that also allows you scan an object, but it's called “Build-a-Buddy” and it can move around, dance, and do other wacky things you get to decide depending on his personality. Mine shits ninja stars as you can see below.

And they can fight each other over who’s the biggest bad ass. It’ll be for… Samurai training or something. And they can suffer such heavy clothing damage, almost every inch of their succulent bodies are exposed. And then they pose sexy like and look vulnerable.
Yum~.
Oh! One minor edit! Clothing damage, but no body damage. Because Parasite Eve 3 has taught me that it’s only sexy when the clothing disappears. Not if real damage is dealt.
But you gotta admit that will be hard xD, i mean, girls are more sexy and more aesthetic, it’s a lot easier to put the girls with different style of clothes and their bust than… a group of boys.. focusing their pants…? And it’s not like they will show any of that unless is a +18 game xD, with bust we can see part of them at least haha xD without reaching the +18 warning.
I actually think it’s quite the opposite, lol. Ladies have an easy time agreeing when another lady is beautiful/sexy/cute. But (because of society, I say), guys generally don’t. However, when a guy or character is hot, well, we have our ‘even the guys want him’ trope, lol. I think men and women are equally aesthetic too. And really, you can have the guys running around in the boxers and such. That wouldn’t be worse than what shounen magazines get away with in terms of fanservice, lol.
Oh, you don’t want to know with what crazy stuff I can have fun with~ xD
True enough, should’ve looked a bit around remembering the handsome men in animes and game. xD Yet I always saw Kamina and Simon and even Snake as more manly than handsome, probably the fault of the anime and or character choice, or my view of handsome and manly is really stereotypically biased~
@DeadmanRaioh:disqus Lawl~. I’ll take your word for it then. x’D
But you’re right. They’re meant to be manly more than anything (but they’re made to cater to guys). It’s just a bonus that they’re good-looking. Lol, that’s interesting. I don’t think they’re exclusive (like how Batman or Red Hood are manly but are also handsome and sexy), but depending on the media, they do try to make them seem that way.
Puchniri: I wouldn’t mind a game for the ladies- i’m a guy and I understand what you’re tryingto say. The reason why there aren’t any games for female fanservice is because: 1. Most (nearly all) game devs are male, because females simply aren’t the majority of gamers. I don’t know why girls don’t like (generally) games as much as men do, maybe it’s just a masive cycle- (Male developer makes game with hot girls and killing in, it appeals to men. Men enjoy video games because of this, then get interested and make their own games. Which appeal to more men.) 2. It would be more difficult to show massive packages- boobs are a noticeable physical feature, whereas you can’t see a guy’s cock size just by looking at his trousers. Boobs are not censored in lads’ mags for example, but the models hide their bits. So…. It would be difficult. And you’d need women to dominate gaming….
