Six tour buses were taken out of service because of mechanical problems after surprise inspections this month at Yosemite and Kings Canyon national parks.

Five buses were sidelined during the Yosemite inspection June 8-9, according to park officials. The inspections involved mechanical and safety checks, reviews of drivers' qualifications and checks of the tour companies' authority to transport passengers. Park spokeswoman Kari Cobb said that 23 buses were released with no violations.

Cobb said 28 buses were issued minor violation notices for repairs and 24 violation notices were issued to companies and bus drivers. Five drivers were ordered out of service for driver's logbook violations and driving without proper classification. Additionally, two buses were ordered out of service for not having California authority to transport passengers.

During the June 19 inspections at Kings Canyon, one bus was taken out of service for steering and brake violations.

Eight buses holding 350 passengers were searched by the California Highway Patrol in conjunction with the National Park Service with the intent to increase awareness of safety regulations and to reduce traffic collisions involving buses.
