It then gets murky. A year later, there was a request to change the address to the Northampton one and a new card issued, still in your name. In the next month a series of cash advances were made, and then nothing. No payments have ever been received in respect of the substantial withdrawals.

In January 2007, the debt was sold to HFO Services. Because the problems happened more than six years ago, Barclaycard has no details of either the crucial request to change the billing address of the card, or any idea where any of the transactions occurred.

The presumption is that a third party obtained your details. Now Barclaycard has recalled the account from HFO Services. It has updated its records to ensure you are not pursued any further for the missing £12,241 and also made sure any adverse information in respect of this alleged debt is not held by the credit reference agencies.

Furthermore, in recognition of the distress caused, it is paying you £300 as a goodwill gesture.
