In the same comedy spirit of Mel Brook’s campy horror classic, “Young Frankenstein,” comes the Chapel Street Players June FUNdraiser, “The House of Frankenstein” by Martin Downing. “The House of Frankenstein” is an all-star combination of horror and comedy, complete with some of the greatest creeps, ghouls and monsters in celluloid history. This monster mash won't scare the life out of you, but you might just die from laughter. Those are just two of the classes on the Newark Arts Alliance’s summer schedule, with arts opportunities for age ranges from 5 to adult. Some classes run for one or two days, and others are Monday-Friday camps. The program’s instructors are experienced artists and teachers. This summer they include Terry Foreman, Carole Fox, Maya & Illiana, Carol Maurer, Jennifer Polillo, Tania Potts, Dain Simons, and Nicole Thomas. Newark Parks and Recreation Department is currently taking registration for its Swimming Classes for ages 3 and up. All classes are held weekday mornings at the George Wilson Pool, located at 303 New London Road. Four levels are offered: Beginner Swim meets 9:50-10:20 a.m.; Advanced Beginner Swim meets 10:25-10:55 a.m.; Intermediate Swim meets 11-11:30 a.m.; Advanced Swim meets 11:35 a.m.-12:05 p.m. The City of Newark Parks and Recreation Department is taking registration for the preschool (ages 4-5) Summer Tot Lot programs. The children do various activities including arts and crafts, stories, games, circle time, supervised free play and a special event. This outdoor recreation program meets at Downes Elementary School. Tot Lot meets Monday through Thursday for three separate two-week sessions starting June 20 through July 28 from 9 a.m.-12 noon. Children must be potty trained. We meet inside in case of rain. The fee for the Tot Lot two-week session is $112 and the Resident discount fee is $92. Newark Parks and Recreation Department is currently taking registration for Camp GWC, a full-day camp held at the George Wilson Community Center. This camp gives children a wide variety of activities to enjoy including games, sports, arts and crafts, swimming and exciting week-long themes. A walking trip is planned each week to local areas of interest. Activities will take place inside and out at the George Wilson Center and Park, located at 303 New London Road in Newark.
