For many, Father did know best

COLUMBUS — Father knows best.

At least that is what we can tell him today as we celebrate Father’s Day.

Dads do, whether we ask him to or not, dispense words of wisdom to their children. Several readers have shared the lessons learned and the best advice that was given to them by their fathers.

* To take time to appreciate and enjoy nature. — Jesse Jackson

* If you can’t say something nice about someone, don’t say anything. — Ann Dales

* Don’t let the first words that spring to your mind, be the next ones on your lips. Take your time in replying. — Mike Oglevie

* Two things: Honesty and hard work. — Paul Canaday

* My dad taught himself how to play guitar and started his own country band. He was not afraid to get up in front of people to sing. I joined a band in my early 20s, and although I’m not in a band anymore, I’ve been singing ever since. He also donates his time using his many talents, and I try to do the same. Thanks, Dad, for setting a good example. — Moni Albracht

* The best thing I learned from my dad was the value of being humble, living simply and finding the humor in everyday moments. He didn’t have an easy life growing up, but still had an easy smile. — Tammy Bichlmeier

* My dad exhibited unconditional love. I wish that I was as good at it as he was. — Tom Burton

* Commitment. — William Gumm

* When I was young, I was told to do a job around the yard (mowing and trimming), and being in a hurry I didn’t do the job correctly. I was asked by my dad “If you don’t think you have time to do the job correctly the first time, when do you think you will have time to do it over?” I have always remembered those words and have tried to use that lesson in everyday activities. — Jon Zavadil

* The best thing I ever learned from my dad was to believe in myself. He led by example and taught me that if I work hard, be fair and honest, I will succeed at whatever I endeavor to do. Whether it was making friends in a new school, playing high school soccer, adopting children from abroad or buying a coffee shop, he always believed in me. He is quite possibly the world’s best dad! — Jill Tate

* The best thing I learned from my father was the respect for the dignity of labor. I’ve had no problems getting to know people around the world by talking to them when they are working and getting to know them. I’ve talked with a New York City subway driver, and he let me take the wheel for a couple of stops ... the local baker taught me to bake some khobust (good) bread here in Afghanistan. My father works with farmers and he connects at a coffee shop level with them. I’ve learned that skill and got to know so many good people with the creation of the Higgins Memorial in Columbus while I was a teacher there. My father turned 70 this year and is still working with farmers. I doubt you will ever get him to retire. — Gerald D.

LEGO RATTLE Teeter Totter (*rare*) (Meet locally) $14 | Natick

Unique baby rattle and lego building block all-in-one. Provides many building and playing options.
Legos can be stacked on both sides of this toy to join together a structure built horizontally or vertically.
One side of the rattle has a stationary flat base plate with 8 studs on it to accept building blocks.
Other side of the rattle has a teeter totter base plate with 8 studs on it to accept building blocks.
When the wheels beneath the toy roll forward or backwards the base plate seesaws back and forth as well as any blocks, people, or items stacked on top. Watch your creation sway back and forth like the Leaning Pisa Tower.

What's not to love about this cute little toy that shakes and whirls in the palm of your hand and goes for a little walk when you put it on a smooth surface and pull the string? If you have a pet cat or dog they might even try to get in on the action. String can also be detached if desired. Just about every child loves to build. The center two wheels create a pendulum affect demonstrating balance and weights. This toy introduces scientific concepts to toddlers such as balance and weights, geometry and physics. The two large sphere shaped balls on either end of this toy make a rattle noise. Extremely rare. Could not find another. Dimensions: 2-1/4"H x 2-3/4"W x 6-1/4"L
