We’ve already experienced triple-digit temperatures in the National Capital Region, schools are letting out, and people are spending more time outdoors enjoying the weather. However, always be aware of heat conditions. Extreme heat conditions allow for potential heat-related illnesses and injuries such as dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
The signs of heat exhaustion are heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea and fainting.
Heat stroke can lead to death if not treated quickly. The signs of a heat stroke are headache, dizziness, confusion and unconsciousness. Individuals suffering from a heat stroke need immediate medical attention.
Keep these outdoor safety tips in mind to prevent heat exhaustion or stroke and to ensure your summer is a safe and pleasant one:
- The first and probably best line of defense against the harsh sun is wearing the proper clothing, such as a lightweight long-sleeved shirt and/or long pants, sunglasses that block 100 percent of ultraviolet rays, and a hat with at least a three-inch brim.
- Sunscreen is imperative when out in the sun. Apply and reapply sunscreen when out in the sun, especially during peak hours and when swimming. According to the University of California at San Francisco's School of Medicine, "Sun block protects your skin by absorbing and/or reflecting UVA and UVB radiation. All sunblocks have a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) rating. The SPF rating indicates how long a sunscreen remains effective on the skin. A user can determine how long their sun block will be effective by multiplying the SPF factor by the length of time it takes for him or her to suffer a burn without sunscreen."
- The American Association of Dermatology (AAD) recommends that a broad spectrum sunblock with an SPF of at least 15 that is applied daily to all areas exposed to the sun, then reapplied every two hours. However, in some recent clinical trials, sunblock with SPF 30 provided significantly better protection than sunblock with SPF15. Waterproof sunscreens last awhile in the water, but reapply sunscreen when coming out of the water.
- Apply a lip balm with at least SPF 15.
- Stay in the shade whenever possible and avoid the peak hours of the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- Drink plenty of water to avoid heat-related illnesses.
- Be aware of the invisible sun which is the sun on a cloudy or outcast day. It is easy to think that a sunburn won't develop because of cooler temperatures or breezes on a cloudy day, but in reality, a sunburn is developing on your skin.

Take a full sheet of newspaper. If you want to make a smaller hat, even half of the sheet will suffice. Fold the sheet in the middle, forming a center crease. Now, fold the other top corner to the centerline, again creating a diagonal crease. Fold the top layer of the bottom edge, in such a way that it covers the edge of the two previous folds. Turn over the paper. In case you want a pirate hat, this is the time to stop. In case you do not want to make a pirate hat, fold in the left outside edge, partway, to the center of the paper. Next, you need to fold in the right outside edge, partway, again to the center of the paper. Adjust the distance between the outside edges, so that the hat is the size of your head. Fold up the bottom edge and open the hat. Now the hat is ready to be decorated. You can decorate the hat in any way you like. You can paint the hat with the color of your choice. Allow it to dry properly. You can also stick on some ornaments. like stars, glitters or any other thing on the hat. Decorating the hat gives you a wide scope to show your creativity.
