Avenue of the Cities resurfacing begins Friday

Road work on Moline’s Avenue of the Cities from 48th Street to the Moline/East Moline border begins  Friday.  The resurfacing project includes the 53rd Street intersection. The project consists of pavement patching, resurfacing and utility adjustments.  Traffic will be reduced to one lane in both directions and drivers can expect delays during daytime operations.  Construction is scheduled to be completed by August 12, weather permitting.

Other area road work to keep an eye out for this morning:

• Northwest Boulevard in Davenport is closed today between 46th and 53rd streets. Local access still will be available for residents of the area. The road will be closed for about two days while city crews make repairs to the road’s surface. Drivers are advised to take alternate routes until the work is completed.

•  Pavement patching is under way on 16th Street from 36th Avenue to John Deere Road in Moline. One northbound lane and one southbound lane will remain open to traffic during construction. Drivers can expect delays. Work is scheduled to be completed by the end of July.

•  Pavement replacement, bridge reconstruction and widening has begun on the 53rd Street and Interstate 74 interchange in Davenport. Construction  work requires intermittent lane closures on 53rd Street. There will be one open lane in each direction at all times. An 11-foot width lane restriction will be in place when workers are present. I-74 will be reduced to one lane in both directions at 53rd Street with a 12-foot width lane restriction. The project is expected to be completed by late December, 2012.

• Rockingham Road at Howell Street in Davenport is be closed to vehicular traffic. Follow the signed detour. Howell Street from north of the Rockingham Road intersection to First Street remains closed to vehicular traffic. Construction activities in this area should be completed by mid-August. Howell Street at River Drive south of Nestle/Purina’s plant entrance also remains closed. Access roads to Nichol’s Aluminum, Midwest Recyclers, McCabe’s Equipment and Iowa Forge have been opened. Follow the signs.

• Locust Street between Ripley Street and Gaines Street is reduced to one lane of travel for each direction. The lane closures are necessary to facilitate work in the roadway involving utility construction.

• Fairmount Street from 49th to 60th streets in Davenport is closed for about 6 months while a bridge is replaced over the west fork of Silver Creek.

First Day Project School Supply Drive : Rock Island/Milan School ...

The First Day Project unites Quad City area school supplies drives to meet the needs of students who need help in obtaining school supplies. Nearly 20,000 students in Quad City schools are from families with incomes low enough to be eligible for Free & Reduced fee waivers for school meals and fees. Some of Quad City area school districts have an average as high as 63% of students qualifying for Free & Reduced. The First Day Project will supply thousands of Quad City students with the items they need to start their school year with confidence.

The United States Postal Service will have carriers pick up donated school supplies on their mail routes during two days in July. Postcards will be delivered to residents a week to ten days prior to the respective collection day.
