Canines welcome in the workplace during nationwide event
It's a dog's life, after all.At least it was Friday as businesses throughout the nation celebrated workers' canine companions by participating in Take Your Dog to Work Day.
Jennifer Stillrich, marketing and training manager at Comstar Federal Credit Union, said this is the first year that the business participated in the event.
"We recently began offering pet insurance for members of Comstar and wanted a fun way to get the word out to staff and members," Stillrich said.
Comstar employee Cheryl Weaver brought her dog Thorin Oakenshield, a Jack Russell terrier/schipperke mix, to the event.
"I love my dog as if he is one of my children," she said.
Sally Fink brought her German shepherds, Charlie and Abby, to the Comstar headquarters on Chairmans Court in Frederick.
"Dogs bring so much pleasure to a family. I hope our members will see our dogs and perhaps want to open their home to a dog as well," she said.
Take Your Dog to Work Day began in 1999, the brainchild of Pet Sitters International, the world's largest educational association for professional pet sitters. It occurs on the Friday after Father's Day.
"Take Your Dog to Work Day is meant to be a unique, fun event for a very serious cause -- promoting pet adoption," said Beth Stultz, PSI marketing manager and Take Your Dog to Work Day spokeswoman.
Although the exact number of businesses participating in the event is unknown, Stultz said thousands of businesses across the U.S. and internationally were expected to participate.
At Comstar's Buckeystown Pike location, the Frederick County Animal Control and Adoption Center brought along Buddy, a beagle, and Cody, a terrier mix. Both are up for adoption.
Shawn Snyder, volunteer coordinator at the animal shelter, said he hoped to educate people about the shelter and to get Buddy and Cody adopted through the event at Comstar.
An estimated 6 million to 8 million cats and dogs are sent to shelters each year; about half of those animals are put down, Stultz said.
"PSI ... believes that by allowing pets in the workplace for this special day, co-workers without pets are able to witness the joys of pet ownership firsthand and are, hopefully, encouraged to adopt a pet," she said.
Stillrich said it was rewarding to help others and to help animals, too.
"My mom always showed me the importance of giving back," she said.
