Founder of EZ Loader mourned

Marine industry veteran Larry Johnson, founder of EZ Loader Boat Trailers, died May 6 in Spokane, Wash. He was 97.

 

Johnson started EZ Loader in 1953 and built it into the largest boat trailer manufacturer in the country, the company said in a statement.

In the mid-1960s he patented the "All Roller Trailer." Trailers previously had bunks or a combination of bunks and rollers.

EZ Loader is still managed and owned by the Johnson family. Larry Johnson's son, Randy, serves as president.

"Larry touched the lives of many and will be missed greatly," the company said.

Funeral arrangements were not immediately available.

We sold EZ Loader trailers in the 60's and 70's at Recreation West in Penticton BC. They were distriubuted in BC by Hoffars Sales in Vancouver. It took me a while to believe in these "consarned- newfangled" trailers but eventually had to admit they did work well and were easier to load. I met Larry on several occasions, a true gentleman dedicated to build the best trailer possible. I'm sure Randy is carrying this tradition. I the 1970's managed an EZ Loader Distribution center in Oregon. In the 1980's I had the privilege of working directly for EZ Loader in Spokane. Knowing Larry was a true honor. Not only was he a very intelligant man, but a compassionate true gentleman, attributes that were passed on to Randy. The boating world is a better place because of Larry, and has lost a true champion and innovator, he will be sorely missed. As an EZ loader trailer dealer in the late 1970's and into the 1980's, I always had a great working relationship with the company. Although I never knew Larry Johnson personally, his staff and his entire company were very good to work with and we sold many of their trailers as a sailboat and small boat dealer, Scrimshaw Yachts LTD. marina was in Mt. Clemens, Michigan. We are now located in Novi, Michigan. Larry Johnson will be missed and yes he was a leader in the boating industry.
