.The famous “twang” came about when Eddy picked the low strings on his Gretsch electric guitar, added vibrato by waggling the tremolo arm and fed the results through an echo chamber rigged up by his first producer, Lee Hazelwood. The result was a rich, deep guitar sound that sauntered through Eddy’s instrumentals like the hero in a western, a frontier rock n’ roller riding out west.
Eddy, however, proved to be something of a one-trick pony. His style influenced guitarists from George Harrison to Jimmy Page but he never found another register beyond the twang. There were to be no experiments with jangling or feedback from the “Rockin’ Guitar Man”. As he aged he faded from view, hanging up the Gretsch and retiring to Nashville.
So it was something of a shock to see the 72-year-old on stage, twanging his guitar and playing tracks from his new album, Road Trip is a blast, as shown by the rendition at the 100 Club of “Primeval”, a lurid instrumental with wailing sax and a brutal beat that stomped off in search of a 1950s B-movie, preferably one featuring Jane Russell in a clingy dress. But Eddy, with excessive diffidence, didn’t play many other tracks from the album. There was evidence of ring-rustiness in his rambling between-song chats too.
Yet the twang rang out true. “Peter Gunn” swaggered by with strutting guitar and raunchy sax. “Shazam!” and “40 Miles of Bad Road” were as dusty and vibrant as an Elmore Leonard short story. The highlight came when Hawley appeared to sing a pair of Lee Hazelwood-penned songs, “Still as the Night” and “The Girl on Death Row”, whose velvety poise and sense of drama came across as powerfully as when they were first performed by Eddy more than 50 years ago.
